About

Search stopped being a list of links

For twenty years, being found meant ranking. Someone typed keywords, scanned ten blue links, and clicked. Every tool, every workflow and every agency retainer was built on that one behaviour.

That behaviour is being replaced. People ask ChatGPT which CRM suits a small team, ask Perplexity to compare two vendors, and read Google’s AI Overview instead of the results underneath it. The answer arrives assembled, with two or three brands named in it. If your client is not one of them, they were not outranked — they were left out of the sentence entirely, and no rank tracker will tell you it happened.

AE Ranking exists to measure that, and to give agencies the answer engine optimization tools to change it.

The agency part matters. When we looked at what existed, the tools were built for a brand watching itself — one workspace, one domain, a seat count bolted on the side. An agency running twenty clients got twenty logins and a monthly scramble to turn screenshots into a report. So we started from the client as the unit of work: scoped workspaces, portals on the agency’s own domain, per-client reporting, and a revenue share for the people who resell us.

What we hold to

One run is an anecdote

Answer engines are non-deterministic. Ask the same question three times and you can get three different sets of brands. Any tool reporting a single run as a fact is selling you noise with a chart on it. We sample repeatedly and report a rate with a confidence interval, even though it costs us more per scan.

A failed engine is not a zero

When a provider errors, the honest answer is "we did not measure this", not "you were not mentioned". Those look identical on a dashboard and mean opposite things. We track them separately and say which one happened.

Mentions and citations are different problems

Being named in an answer and being linked as a source need different work. Adding them into one visibility score is the kind of simplification that sends a client's budget to the wrong place.

We write comparisons we would show a competitor

Our comparison pages take every price from the vendor's own pricing page, say what the competitor is genuinely better at, and end by naming who should pick them instead of us. It costs us some sign-ups. It is the only version worth publishing.

Client data is not our growth channel

Agency client portals, audits and invoices are excluded from every crawler, including the AI ones, and are marked no-index at the page level as well. We do not train on them, aggregate them into public benchmarks, or use them as case studies without asking.

Where we are today

AE Ranking is in an invite-only pilot. We onboard agencies by hand, size each workspace to the team using it, and invoice monthly rather than running a self-serve checkout. That is a deliberate stage, not a permanent model — it is how we find out what agencies actually need before we harden it into a signup flow.

We also run the product on ourselves. The AI Citation Index and our answers pages are produced by the same pipeline our customers use. If it does not work, we find out before they do.

Want to see it on your own data?

We run the walkthrough on a domain you care about — usually one of your clients — rather than a demo account full of invented numbers.
