How do you get a brand cited by Perplexity?
Perplexity is the most citation-forward answer engine — nearly every claim in its answers carries a numbered source link — which makes it the most winnable. It retrieves live pages through its own crawler (PerplexityBot), leans heavily on pages that already rank for the query, and visibly favors sources it can quote cleanly: direct answers, concrete numbers, named entities. Allow its crawler, rank or be featured in what ranks, and structure pages so the answer to the target question can be lifted whole.
Because Perplexity cites so densely, it also cites more third-party surfaces: comparison articles, community threads, review sites. If your own page cannot rank for a query yet, being present in the pages that do rank — the listicles and threads it keeps citing — is a faster route into its answers. Track which specific URLs it cites for your prompts and work that list.
Perplexity documents its crawler and respects robots.txt; verify PerplexityBot has access the same way you verify GPTBot. Its answers change run to run like every engine's, so measure your citation rate over repeated samples, not from one screenshot.
The same extractability rules apply, with one addition: freshness. Perplexity's retrieval favors current pages for time-sensitive queries, so dated, maintained content — with its dateModified visible — outperforms stale evergreen pages on queries where recency matters.
