What actually improves AI visibility, according to the evidence?

Third-party brand mentions are the strongest measured correlate of AI visibility — Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlating at 0.664 across 75,000 brands, roughly three times the correlation of backlinks at 0.218 — followed by ranking on page one of Google, which Seer Interactive measured at about 0.65 against brand mentions in GPT-4o answers. On-page rewriting is a weaker lever than the industry implies.

The widely cited "GEO tactics lift visibility up to 40%" figure comes from a 2024 paper whose experiment placed the page in the model's context before measuring. It shows that once you are retrieved, adding quotations, statistics and cited sources helps you get used — not that rewriting gets you discovered.

Independent re-tests have not reproduced broad gains. C-SEO Bench found only 3 of 54 method-domain combinations significantly positive and none in question answering, and SAGEO Arena found body-text-only rewrites actually reduced retrieval presence by 9-16% and citations by about 6%.

Practically: pursue mentions on the sources engines actually cite for your topic — relevant community threads, YouTube, review platforms, industry roundups, Wikipedia where notability supports it — and keep classic SEO strong. Treat content rewriting as support, not the primary lever.
