What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting a brand mentioned and cited inside the answers AI assistants give — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews — rather than in a list of blue links. It matters because AI answers increasingly resolve a question without the user clicking anything: a 2026 randomized experiment found that showing a Google AI Overview cut outbound organic clicks by 39.8%, and Ahrefs measured a 58% click-through reduction for top-ranking pages on AI Overview keywords.
AEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe the same practice. Terminology in this space is unstable — roughly 59% of SEO commentators use "GEO" while under a third kept consistent terminology across a year — so the label matters less than the outcome: being present in the answer.
The important distinction from SEO is what you are optimizing for. Traditional search rewards ranking a page. Answer engines synthesize a response and may name a brand without linking it at all, which is why mentions and citations have to be measured separately.
Search volume has not moved to AI wholesale. As of mid-2026, 95% of ChatGPT users still used Google in the same period, and all AI tools combined drew roughly 2.9% of desktop web visits against about 34% for search engines. The disruption shows up as zero-click erosion inside Google rather than as query migration away from it.
