What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?

They are three names for overlapping work aimed at different result surfaces. SEO (search engine optimization) earns positions in ranked lists of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) earns mentions and citations inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the academic name for the same goal as AEO, coined by the 2023 Princeton paper that first measured which content changes make generative engines cite a source more often. In practice: SEO optimizes for the click, AEO/GEO optimize for being the answer, and strong SEO remains an input to both because answer engines retrieve heavily from what already ranks.

The terms matter less than the mechanics they point at. The GEO paper's core finding — that adding quotations, statistics and citations to a page measurably increased its visibility in generative answers — is the same directive AEO practitioners reach: content that is specific, attributed and extractable gets used; content that is vague gets skipped.

The real behavioral difference is measurement. SEO measures rank, which is stable enough to check once. Answer engines are non-deterministic — the same question can produce different brands run to run — so AEO measurement has to be sampled and expressed as a rate, or it is anecdote.

Budget-wise they are not rivals: the pages that win citations are usually also strong organic pages, and the third-party coverage that drives brand mentions in AI answers is classic digital-PR work. What changes is the scoreboard, not most of the work.
